| Doc Walker - October 17 & 18, 2008 - The Schooner Showroom |
Halifax- Casino Nova Scotia is excited to present Doc Walker live in the Schooner Showroom on October 17 & 18.
Doc Walker took a new approach to recording Beautiful Life. Instead of wearing themselves out through an exhausting process of over thinking, extensive rewrites and excessive tracks (they wrote close to 120 songs for their last album, over a two-and-a-half year period), the trio trekked down to Nashville for a condensed, fruitful three-week session. It was an intense time for all of them. They set up camp on a ranch they dubbed the “song farm” and teamed up with producer Justin Niebank, a country music ace best known for his work on Vince Gill’s recent Grammy-winning These Days album).
The uplifting lead single and title track “Beautiful Life” was the first song all three band mates wrote together. “It was one of the first times Murray, Chris and I sat down and things really started clicking,” Wasyliw recalls. “I came up with some chords, then Murray started spewing out lyrics, and the other two of us immediately came up with lyrics. I remember we called our wives and girlfriends back home in Manitoba. They were blown away. After ‘Beautiful Life,’ we had the confidence and were inspired to keep rolling, but we had a lot to live up to after writing that song.”
They delivered. From the ballad “Echo Road” to the pedal steel-enhanced “One Last Sundown,” a beautifully bittersweet look back at first love at the country fair, from blues on their cover of the Genesis track “That’s All” to the organ that sweeps through album-closing lullaby “Stay Brave,” the members of Doc Walker have outdone themselves. In a singles-driven world, these three lads have created an album in its most classic sense, a collection of songs with a solid line up reminiscent of legendary releases by the Eagles and Bob Seger, a flashback to a different time. Sung with harmonies and heart, Beautiful Life is one of those records you’ll want to listen to while driving with the top down on a late summer night.
Casino Nova Scotia is pleased to present Doc Walker. Shows will take place on October 17 & 18 in the Schooner Showroom. Tickets are $36.50 including tax and service charges. |

Halifax- Casino Nova Scotia is pleased to have singer/songwriters Dave Gunning and Ron Hynes in the Schooner Showroom on October 24 at 8PM.
Two-time 2008 ECMA award winner, Dave Gunning and Canadian songwriting icon, Ron Hynes, ride the musical journey on their “Hard Workin’ Hands” tour.
Inspired by Ron, it all began one night in a downtown Halifax bar when he approached Dave to write with him. Hynes wrote “Take a look at these “hard workin’ hands” on a napkin and shoved it at Gunning, saying, “Who is this guy? Write a song about him”. That line eventually turned into “Hard Workin' Hands”, a signature co-write and duet on Dave’s latest release, “House For Sale”.
With a songwriting career that spans more than 35 years, Ron Hynes is a six-time East Coast Music Award winner, a Genie Award winner and a past Juno, CCMA and Canadian Folk Music Awards nominee. Ron’s latest recording, simply titled “Ron Hynes”, is a stirring collection of soul-baring and personal songs that have earned him numerous accolades, nominations and awards including the 2007 ECMA Male Solo Recording of the Year and the 2006 MusicNL Awards for Songwriter of the Year, Folk-Roots Artist of the Year, and Entertainer of The Year.
Dave Gunning has been acclaimed as one of Canada’s best up-and-coming singer-songwriters. Winner of the 2008 East Coast Music Awards for Male Solo Recording of the Year and Folk Recording of the Year for his sixth recording, “House For Sale”, Gunning has solidified himself as a respected songwriter and performer. “House For Sale” excels in demonstrating his solid songwriting ability and features the co-write and duet, “Hard Workin’ Hands” with Newfoundland’s premiere songsmith, Ron Hynes.
Casino Nova Scotia is pleased to present Dave Gunning & Ron Hynes. The show will take place on Friday, October 24 in the Schooner Showroom. Tickets are $25.00 including tax and service charges. Tickets are on sale Friday, September 5. |

Since her self-titled debut was released in 2004, it has sold almost 100,000 copies worldwide, hit the Billboard Top 5 in Canada and the Top 15 in the United States, and topped the iTunes jazz charts in five different territories. Her most recent release Make Someone Happy won a JUNO for best vocal jazz album 2008 and since then she has maintained a rigorous touring schedule across the globe – headlining sold-out shows in Canada, the U.S., Japan, and throughout Europe – and continued to balance her burgeoning music career with her commerce studies at the University of Toronto.
Make Someone Happy is an expression of Sophie transformed. With each track, it tells a tale of her past, her present, and a future filled with pride, fear, excitement and passion:
“Some of the songs on the album had been part of our live show for over a year and we needed a producer who could wrap his head around the material objectively. After the first meeting with Steve, I knew I wanted to work with him. He echoed my feeling of wanting to take listeners to a different place from the first album" Sophie Milman, circa 2007: so much accomplished, and so much more to come.
