It’s been quite a ride for our double-decker buses.A ride that started in London, England after World War ll. With the city’s fleet of buses in shambles, it had to be completely rethought. Enter the 8’ wide, 56-passenger, double-decker Routemaster buses, in 1954. They were winners all around! The public loved them. London Transport loved them. So much so that, by 1959, they had been upgraded to the 30’ long Routemasters, which seated 72 passengers. These were developed by AEC, Royal Park Vehicles, with much input from London Transport. Outlasting 3 generations of “replacements”History and politics finally caught up with the Routemasters. They were not wheelchair-accessible and the use of both a driver and conductor proved to be costly. The last Routemasters chugged the streets of London on December 9, 2005, 46 years after they first appeared. They’re back. And we’ve got them!Ambassatours Gray Line is the proud owner of no fewer than 12 of these winners. Tourists from around the world enjoy their Atlantic seacoast trips even more, thanks to our brightly-coloured favourites. Although other countries have also adopted Routemasters, Ambassatours boasts the largest working fleet in the world. |
