Peggy's Cove Tour by Bus.jpg

Peggys Cove Tour by Bus

About This Tour:

En route to this seaside village pass-by the Halifax Public Gardens, a quiet oasis amid a cosmopolitan city; see the Citadel National Historic Site, a fort perched high above the city; the Old Town Clock, a gift given to the city by Prince Edward the Duke of Kent in 1803; as well as other notable landmarks such as Province House, the naval dockyards and the famous Halifax waterfront boardwalk. As you travel along the winding coastal highway of the Lighthouse Route to the tiny fishing village of Peggy’s Cove, it is little wonder it has been an inspiration for artists and an irresistible lure for budding and seasoned adventurers for generation after generation. The colorful houses and fishing shacks perched atop the solid stone rocky outcrop that overlooks the restless waters of the Atlantic exhibit the wear and tear of the ocean and its punishing storms. Yet they endure, much like the small population of approximately 32 people who are year-round residents.

McNabs Island-6.jpg

Experience McNabs Island Tour

About This Tour:

Despite its wild and woolly past, McNab's Island today is unspoiled, and getting better. Tall forests, windswept beaches, abandoned houses, green fields, peace and quiet have replaced the restaurants and dance venues. There's still a fort at each end to explore but the soda-pop plant and steam-operated merry-go-round are gone. They have all been left behind, and the earth and its creatures are once again in charge. Only the trails, signs, maps, and restrooms remind you that you're in a city. But you can still see lots of reminders of a long and interesting past.

The Experience McNabs Island Tour is available for private charter (maximum 12 persons)

Hiking Options:

Walk to where the dock meets the island. While standing facing the island:

  • Two long hiking options—Step off the wharf and turn left or turn right on the rocky road.

    • Left for Fort Ives, the houses, Ives Point

    • Right for the saltwater pond, wreck cove, cemetery, Fort McNab

  • Three short hiking options:

    • Along the beach to your right

    • Up the hill by the information signs for ruins of pleasure grounds, farm and pop factory

    • Around the cove to your left at your 8 o'clock position and out to the bluff at Hugonin Point

If you visit either of the forts, be sure to climb up to where the cannons are for some spectacular views of the ocean, with Halifax on the right and the Caribbean on the left. (It's further away)

The boat ride is a big part of the adventure: big, comfy seats—there are only 12—and historian and author Bob Chaulk to prep you for your visit.

What to Bring

The Essentials:

  • What to take—footwear, jacket, rain gear, water, hat, sunscreen, bug repellant, cell phone

  • Be at Garrison Pier 15 minutes prior to return departure

  • Ambassatours phone number 902-420-1015

  • There is no potable water and no washrooms on the island. There are however, composting toilets.

Halifax Harbour Cruise

About This Tour:

A Royal Navy admiral once called Halifax Harbour the most important port in the world. A lot has happened on, in, and under the harbour and along its shores.

You'll find out about it when you spend some time in the most comfortable vessel you'll ever sit in and slowly cruise the beguiling waters of Halifax. Your captain and guide is Bob Chaulk, harbour diver, historian, and the writer of six books about East Coast waters— and the spinner of many yarns. You have his undivided attention.

Then, there's the view from out there. Don't get us going on that!

What you'll see as we glide by:

  • Downtown Halifax

  • All kinds of ships, including warships, cruise ships, container ships, up close

  • The Halifax waterfront from the Dockyard to the container piers

  • The outer Halifax Islands

  • The line that takes you over the horizon, straight to the Caribbean

  • The Harbour beach where the people swam and sunbathed in the 1800s

  • Where they anchored and trained for the Battle of Quebec

  • Where the Royal Navy ships anchored

  • The bottom of the Macdonald Bridge. Look up, waaay up.

  • The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Dockyard

  • Where Oland's first brewery was located

  • Where the Halifax Explosion occurred, including the locations of the collision, the explosion, the ships and where they ended up

What's down there, anyway?

Other things you'll hear about:

  • The submarine nets that kept the U-boats out

  • The convoys, the Battle of the Atlantic and the third largest navy in the world—RCN

  • What a container ship sounds like when it goes over you

  • What it's like looking up at the bottom of a warship

  • The big ship that Canadian Naval guns sank in the harbour

  • The harbour ferry that burned and sank and its connection to the Bluenose

  • The two railway bridges across the harbour

  • The antique bottles, steamship China, navy memorabilia and other goodies on the bottom

  • The seals, fish, lobsters, shrimp, scallops, crabs, anemones, and creepy crawlies

As a result, Murphy’s has developed and implemented a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for identifying and assisting such passengers. This SOP is part of the Murphy's Safety Management System (SMS) and includes procedures for assisting and accommodating passengers during boarding and disembarking, during emergencies, and while enjoying the onboard service delivery. While delivering the shuttle ferry service to Georges Island, Murphy’s operations will be guided by the Canadian Transportation Agencies Ferry Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities: Code of Practice. Vessel boarding arrangements will allow for convenient boarding for mobility impaired persons, including those in manual and powered wheelchairs.
