1. Plan

Before heading to downtown Halifax, it's important to plan your parking strategy. Research the area you'll be visiting and identify potential parking options. Refer to our Parking Map below and  consider using the HotSpot parking app: download the HotSpot mobile app to help you pay for your on-street parking. Get HotSpot on Google Play or download it on the Apple App Store. Planning will allow you to make a more informed decision and find the best parking spot before you even arrive.

2. Arrive early or later

If possible, try to arrive early or late when looking for parking in downtown Halifax. During the very early morning or later in the evening (after 6pm), there is generally less demand for parking, making it easier to find a spot. This is particularly helpful if you're planning to visit popular attractions or dine at popular restaurants, as finding parking can be more challenging during peak hours.

3. Explore side streets

While the main streets in downtown Halifax may be crowded with vehicles, don't forget to explore the side streets. Often, these quieter streets have hidden parking spots that are less known to visitors. Take the time to drive around and explore different areas, as you might stumble upon a hidden gem with available parking. Quite often, parking on side streets is free of charge.

4. Utilize parking garages

Parking garages can be a convenient option in downtown Halifax. While they may be more expensive than street parking or off-site lots, garages offer the advantage of being sheltered and secure. They are particularly useful during inclement weather or if you plan on leaving your vehicle for an extended period. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rates and operating hours of different garages to find the best option for your needs.

5. Consider alternative transportation

If finding parking in downtown Halifax proves to be too challenging or expensive, consider alternative transportation options. The city has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses and ferries, which can take you to various destinations. Additionally, Halifax is a bike-friendly city, with many bike lanes and rental options available. Exploring the city on foot is also a great way to avoid parking hassles and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Street Parking in Downtown Halifax is pay-by-zone system using pay stations (see image below).
