Bent Ridge Winery

Bent Ridge Winery started with an idea by Glenn Dodge 25 years ago, who was very interested in collecting different wines in his cellar which triggered a curiosity into making his own wine. This evolved into the creation of his Bent Ridge Winery which officially opened to the public on July 1st, 2018.

They also own a restaurant named Fuego, meaning ‘fire’ in Spanish. One of the most popular features of the winery has become the wood-fired pizza oven. Bent Ridge pizzas quickly began amassing rave reviews, and five years later, they’re even more delicious.

Stop number two is Planters Ridge Winery located in Port Willimas Nova Scotia.

Planters Ridge Winery

Planter's Ridge Winery has a rich history that dates back to its founding in 2010 by John McLarty, a passionate wine lover with a vision to create exceptional wines in Nova Scotia. Inspired by the region's winemaking potential, McLarty set out to establish a winery that would showcase the unique characteristics of Nova Scotia's terroir. With meticulous planning and a deep understanding of the land, McLarty acquired a beautiful property in the Annapolis Valley and began the journey of turning his dream into a reality.

The winemaking process starts with the careful selection of the grape varieties that thrive in Nova Scotia's cool climate. Planter's Ridge Winery focuses on varietals such as L'Acadie Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, which have proven to excel in the region's unique terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested at their optimal ripeness, ensuring that only the finest fruit makes its way into the winery.

Once the grapes reach the winery, they undergo a gentle pressing to extract the juice, which is then fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels, depending on the desired style of the wine. The winemaking team closely monitors the fermentation process, adjusting temperature and other variables to ensure optimal flavor development.

Their winemaking philosophy and practices, along with their many years of experience in the wine industry, are an integral part of what Planters Ridge Winery is today.

The final stop on the Wine Enthusiast Tour is Benjamin Bridge – Nova Scotia’s Sparkling Wine House.

Benjamin Bridge Winery:

Benjamin Bridge Winery traces its roots back to 1999 when Gerry McConnell and his late wife Dara Gordon stumbled upon an ideal vineyard site in Nova Scotia's Gaspereau Valley. Inspired by the potential of the region, they embarked on a mission to produce world-class sparkling wines that would rival those of Champagne. With a deep respect for traditional winemaking methods and a vision to showcase the unique terroir of Nova Scotia, Benjamin Bridge Winery was born.

From the very beginning, McConnell and Gordon understood the importance of patience and persistence. They knew that crafting exceptional wines would require time and unwavering dedication. Over the years, they assembled a team of experts who shared their passion and commitment to excellence. Today, Benjamin Bridge Winery stands as a testament to their vision and the belief that Nova Scotia has the potential to produce truly extraordinary wines.

Whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur or an adventurous enthusiast, exploring Nova Scotia wines is a journey of discovery, where each bottle reveals a new story, and every sip takes you closer to the heart of the region. So, grab a glass, raise a toast to the hidden gems of Nova Scotia, and embark on a wine adventure like no other.
